Once in a Blue Moon

full_moon.jpg

It was a Full Moon last night. If a second Full Moon occurs in a single calendar month it is called a Blue Moon. On average, only 41 months will have two Full Moons in every century (now you know where the saying ‘once in a blue moon‘ comes from). The problem is, this month’s Blue Moon only occured in New Zealand. Mallorca had one a month ago, though, in June.

This is Palma International Airport. The view is of the terminal building from the car park, with a 5,500 vehicle capacity. PMI airport counts over 22,000,000 air passengers per year (2006), with approx. 11,000,000 arrivals and 11,000,000 departures.

Espanya Go Home

canya_contra.jpg

Quite a large number of people in Mallorca would like to be independent from Spain. Often these people are the older ones, or they belong to the younger generation. Their reasons are mainly to do with the history of Mallorca, and the Spanish takeover of the Mallorcan crown.

That’s what this grafitti means: Espanya, go home!

A Taste of 1984 …

A total of 24 CCTV surveillance cameras have been installed in Felanitx by mayoress, Catalina Soler, over the last few weeks. Big Sister is watching you. As it turns out the costly exercise seems to lack the necessary legal prerequisites.

A Night in Heaven

If you ever want to get away from it all, I suggest that you spend a night or two in one of Mallorca’s many monasteries. Like this one, for instance, near Porreres.

The Santuario de Montesión has just been restored to some very good standard with 15 fully equipped guest rooms. Very comfortable indeed, peaceful, solitary and tranquil. Well, most times. Telephone for reservations: 971.647.185.

Going With the Times …..

santanyi.jpg

Santanyí in the south east of Mallorca is celebrating its patron saint today, 25th July: Sant Jaume.

When we first came to live in Mallorca, 20 years ago, we settled in Santanyí. The village then had 12 bakers and 1 estate agent within the village boundaries. Now you will be lucky to find 5 panaderias, and it is increasingly difficult to ignore today’s 19 estate agents. Going with the times may not always be a good thing.

A Day at the Races

manacor_horses.jpg

There are two race courses for horse trotting on the island of Mallorca, one in Manacor and one in Palma. The photo was taken during the warm-up; the actual race goes in the opposite direction. Number 5 did not win on that day.
