Foraging Wild Edibles

Foraging for food in Mallorca can be quite a pleasant past time. Hunting down some wild edible plants can be an exquisite, fun-filled adventure, especially if you have children. The countryside is full of wild and nutritious plants for us to appreciate and, why not, eat.

Autumn and Winter are the best seasons for wild mushrooms, for instance, of which there are plenty in Mallorca. Of course it would be best if you knew some basic specifics; if in doubt, it is better to ask for advice and not put yourself or your loved ones in danger.

Now, with Spring in the air, the wild asparagus (Asparagus acutifolius) and the wild artichoke (Cynara scolymus) make for a welcome addition to our culinary intake. In Summer, we can find fennel, wild garlic and other herbs as well as berries and fruits.

The wild asparagus can be found in many Mallorcan country lanes. You must make sure that no herbicides have been sprayed before you gather the creeping sprouts. The wild asparagus taste is quite exquisite, especially when boiled just briefly and prepared with some olive oil and onions, even an egg. Enjoy.
