Empanadas for Easter


Tradition has it that one eats empanadas for Easter in Mallorca.

Easter Sunday is the end of the six week long cuaresma (lent) period. Now, one can eat meat again.

In the old days, empanadas were made by one’s abuela (granny) or one’s mum, with the help of all members of the family. Nowadays, these wholesome pastries are more often bought from the local bakeries or even from the supermarkets.

Traditionally, Easter empanadas were made of lamb. If it says ‘carne’ like in my photo, the empanada is made of pork.
