The Windmill Trail

Windmills for bringing up water for irrigation purposes were introduced to Mallorca in 1847 by a Dutch engineer, Paul Bouvy Schorenberg. The first mill of that type was erected in Prat de Sant Jordi.

The first windmill for water in the Campos area dates from 1860. Today, out of a total of over 1,000 windmills in the Campos municipality, some 550 are still in existence. For the last ten years or so, the majority of these mills has been slowly renovated to their old glory.

Today these mills are mainly a touristic embellishment. To this end, the Ajuntament de Campos has laid out a Ruta de Molins de Campos. This route makes for gentle excursions on foot or by bicycle. The Campos townhall hands out maps to anyone interested in this endeavour.

The photo was taken near Campos, Mallorca, Spain. The date: March 26th, 2008. The time was 12:50:05.
