The Big Friendly Giants

giants.jpg

Towns and villages in Mallorca retain the tradition of The Giants, larger than life puppets that on special occasion are being paraded up and down the High Street. On days of village fiestas, the local gegants (catalán for BFG) are put on display, like here, outside the town’s Sala (town hall, or seat of the Mayor).

Every now and then, there is a festival of els gegants, when these friendly giants congregate, including visiting ones from mainland Spain or even other countries, where a similar tradition may be upheld.

My headline today is meant as a friendly homage to Roald Dahl, the British author of Norwegian descent who I once had the pleasure of meeting, if fleetingly.

The photo was taken in the town of Felanitx, Mallorca. The date: August 26th, 2007. The time was 13:24:48.
