Crossroads

creu.jpg

Traditionally, villages and towns in Mallorca have creus, which are cross-shaped road monuments, like the one shown here.

These crosses are placed out of town, where roads enter into the municipality, and were a means of welcoming the traveller or visitor to the community, or of wishing those who are off on their way to other shores, an Adios! or a Bon viatje! Bigger towns may have a larger number of crosses, like up to eight or more, for each road leading out of town.

In Felanitx I have counted seven crosses so far, and there may be more, as yet uncounted.

The photo was taken in the town of Felanitx, Mallorca, Spain. The date: October 2nd, 2007. The time was 17:35:17.
