One of the nicest but probably least known monasteries in Mallorca is the Monestir de Santa Maria de la Real in Son Espases, just outside of Palma de Mallorca, the island capital. The monastery was founded in 1235, that’s nearly 800 years ago. You might have been there attending an open-air concert in the Summer which is quite a gratifying experience.
If you have been reading the local newspapers you might have come across the name of Son Espases, because a new mega hospital is going to be built in the monastery’s immediate vicinity. The new hospital is meant to replace the existing hospital of Son Dureta which, with its 50 years of age, is now deemed obsolete and out-of-date.
Local residents of the monastery’s neighbourhood are vehemently in opposition to the actual location of the new project but it appears that the Balearic Parliament has now voted in favour of the new hospital building. All going ahead as planned, the new Son Dureta will be open for business, because business it undoubtedly is, by 2010. The old Son Dureta hospital in Palma will then be demolished and the site handed over to the property sharks.
The photo was chosen from my archive. It was taken in the outskirts of Palma de Mallorca. The date: March 28th, 2005. The time was 14:48:57.

Hi, I’m fortunate enough to have a house […] just outside Porto Colom, but unfortunate enough to still be working and living in England.
In between many visits each year, I make a point each day of looking at your Photo Blog. At this gloomy time of year in England, it reminds me of the beauty and the superb quality of life on the island.
I find your notes extremely interesting and as a professional designer, I think the quality and composition of your images are top quality. Please, please keep the blog going as it warms my soul every day.
