Abattoir Blues

escorxador.jpg

The old Municipal slaughterhouse in Palma de Mallorca is known as s’Escorxador.

The large complex is pleasing for its architectural style, clearly influenced by the Spanish Modernism of the early years of the 20th Century. The abattoirs were built by the well known Mallorcan architect, Gaspar Bennàssar Moner who has also built other remarkable buildings in Palma, such as the beautiful Sa Nostra bank building in Calle Ramon Llull, the Bar Cristal building in Plaza España, or the recently demolished bridge behind the Parc d’Estacions. In fact, he was appointed Palma’s Municipal architect in 1901.

The s’Escorxador buildings have been recently converted into a cultural centre. Bars, restaurants, a Civic Centre, a four-screen cinema and many other traits are quite popular with the local comunity.

The photo was taken in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The date: November 2nd, 2007. The time was 15:56:51.
