One Exceptional Tree

I love trees. This one here is a real beaute. It is a giant Ficus macrophylla, known as the Ficus de la Misericòrdia. You can find it in the Jardins de la Misericòrdia in Palma de Mallorca, near the top end of the Rambla dels Ducs de Palma.

The tree is enormous. Its crown spans 33 m in diameter. The height reaches 26 m. The ficus is estimated to be between 150 and 200 years old. The Misericòrdia gardens have recently been tidied up and reopened to the public. I suggest a visit.

There are many more exceptional trees in Mallorca and on the Balearic Islands. You can find a catalogue of the oldest and the most stunning trees on the website of the Govern de les Illes Balears.

The photo was taken in Palma de Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: May 29th, 2008. The time was 15:11:05.
