Dimonis and Other Wondrous Delights

Folklore in Mallorca is characterized by mellifluous music and ceremonial dances. Dimonis, diables and dracs play their roles in traditional rural fiestas in the Mallorcan country villages.

Selva celebrated its traditional Fira de ses Herbes last weekend, this time in its ninth year. A delightful affair in case you wondered. Apart from devils, demons, dragons and dances, the fair centres around traditional herbs and in particular, the Murta. The murta is our Common Myrtle (Myrtus communis), which used to be widespread in the Mediterranean region, but is now so to a lesser extent.

A large still was built in Selva’s market square where murta leaves were distilled into Aigua de Murta (myrtle water), a fragrant tonic for use in skin preparations, as known from Medieval times.

If you missed the herbal affair in Selva this time, don’t miss it next year (June 12th-14th, 2009, to be precise). A goodly day out, for sure.

The photo was taken in Selva, Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: June 8th, 2008. The time was 10:55:39.

  1. Stress is by nature not good in life and has to be avoided. By so doing, we need to involve ourselves in distractive social activities, not forgeting the intake of supplements. This is because the population is depreciating each minute due to stress.
