Es Fangar is one of the largest fincas in Mallorca in terms of surface area. The finca is situated between Son Maciá and Felanitx. Large parts of the domain are protected land under the Mallorcan ANEI law (Area Natural de Especial Interés).
Es Fangar was bought by a German industrialist some 8 years ago for what was than the highest price ever paid for land in Mallorca. That alone was not fame enough for the proprietor; he achieved even more notoriety due to his decision to deny public access to his finca, access that apparently had been granted for many centuries.
A legal dispute ensued a few years ago, brought on by the Plataforma Pro Camins Públics Oberts. A court judgement on the dispute is expected later this month.
The good news is a change of heart on the proprietor’s side: pedestrians are now allowed to enter and ramble the vast extension of largely unspoiled Mallorcan landscape. I walked through some parts of Es Fangar last Sunday, and what a pleasant walk it was.
If you are interested in a walk through Es Fangar Nature Reserve, you better act quickly because access might become restricted, once again.
