Sa Pobla is probably the town with the greatest propensity of any pueblo in Mallorca to the Festa de Sant Antoni. For a start, the saint is the patron saint of Sa Pobla: the parish church is named after Sant Antoni Abat. Then, Sa Pobla is proud of holding Mallorca’s only Museu de Sant Antoni i el dimoni. What more do you need? Sa Pobla’s big day – and night – is today, Saturday, even though festivities carry on all through tomorrow, as well. The Sa Pobla celebrations traditionally come with a special gastronomic event devoted to eels, the Mostra Gastronòmica de s’Anguila a sa Pobla, with 15 bars and restaurants participating. The Mostra is well worth a detour.
Sa Pobla’s gastronomic highlight during the Sant Antoni proceedings always is the Espinagada amb Anguiles. This is the most delicious Empanada-type concoction with freshly caught eel from nearby s’Albufera, chard, leek, raisins, garlic, spring onions, olive oil, parsley, pepper, paprika and salt, all wrapped up in an envelope of pastry made of flour, lard, water and olive oil. Try one if ever you have the opportunity. If you should happen to be in Sa Pobla today or tomorrow, the best Espinagada amb Anguiles is served in the Bar d’es Tren, the dish being home-made on the premises.
