Tortoises’ Fountain

tortoises.jpg

Everybody knows the tall fountain at the top of Passeig d’es Born, opposite C & A, in Plaça Rei Joan Carles I.

Most people realize that the tall obelisk is crowned by a bat, wings spread, the heraldic emblem of the Ciutat de Mallorca.

Not everybody knows, though, that the pyramidal column is carried by four tortoises, squashed under a ton or two of finest Santanyí stone, just above the four water spouting lion heads.

The fountain is really called the Font de la Princesa, in honour of the future Queen Isabel II, and was erected by the city council in 1833/34.

The photo was taken in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The date: January 11th, 2008. The time was 13:01:47.
