Níspero (Eriobotria japonica)

The Níspero (Eriobotria japonica) is also known as a Loquat, Japanese Medlar or Mespilus japonica. This plant is widely available throughout Spain. It is indigenous to China and Japan, from where it came to Spain in the 18th Century.

The Loquat is on sale in Mallorcan markets at this time of year. Some people find the thin, firm skin somewhat irritating and the large brown seeds annoying. But it is a tasty fruit with a nice, fresh flavour. It mixes well with other fruits and it allows for good jams, jellies and chutneys. Try them.

The photo was taken near Felanitx, Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: May 2nd, 2008. The time was 14:51:50.
