Polo in Mallorca

One does not hear a lot about Polo being played in Mallorca. That is Polo as a team sport played outdoors on horseback. Yes, there is professionally played Polo in Spain, on the mainland, and Spain even won a Silver medal in the Olympic games, a long time ago when Polo was still an Olympic discipline.

But Mallorca, nothing, no Polo. We have Tennis in Mallorca (and Rafa Nadal), Golf, football, sailing, swimming and kayaking, and a few other sporting activities, but no Polo.

Polo is played on a grass field, and that may be part of the problem: the scarcity of water in Mallorca. Mind you, there are some 25 Golf courses in Mallorca, on last count, and the same water problem does not seem insurmountable for Golf, or does it?

Anyway, I am told that there is a small Polo field somewhere near Sa Rapita, possibly for private use only. I will try and find out about it.

I do know, however, that some private investors have proposed a permanent Polo field near Campos, together with an extensive array of villas and apartments, but such endeavours were rejected by the Balearic Government in Palma de Mallorca, some time in 2003.

Be that as it may, a three-day Polo Masters event is advertised to be held from September 26th to 28th, 2008, at El Toro in Calvià. A German Polo association appear to be behind the project. Let’s see if they can make it happen.

Postscript:

Apparently, the dates for the Polo event in Calvià have changed. The Polo Masters Mallorca Calvià will now take place at Easter 2009 (April 10th-12th). Find details on this website.

The photo was taken in Ses Salines, Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: July 4th, 2008. The time was 12:22:30.

  1. There is a small Polo Field between Campos and Ses Covetes right next to the finca Sa Barrala. Right behind the curve of the Telefonica Building. I’m sure with these directions you will find it:
Leave Campos on the Cami des Palmer towards Ses Covetes. When the Cami des Palmer ends km0 you have to cross the street and follow the small road infront of you. It goes all the way straight until you are in front of the entrance of the finca Sa Barala. Now follow the street to the right and to the left again after 20m and THERE YOU ARE!!!

  2. Always good to read about swimming, my ex was an olympic swimmer..

Can I ask though – how did you get this picked up and into google news?

Very impressive, is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?

Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..

  3. I would have thought there would be a really good following of Polo in Mallorca. It is such a pleasure to watch and take part in, and now it is getting more popular. Your planners ought to take note….they are really missing an opportunity here to encourage a nice crowd of people to the island, people who are happy to eat in restaurants and help with the ecomomy of Mallorca. The only problem would be that as Mallorca is such a lovely place it would get even busier. But at least it would bring something positive to the area.

  4. Hi,
I wasn’t aware of any Polo taking place in Calvia, I’ll keep my eyes peeled Sa Rapita too and let you know if a spot the field 🙂
