The Castell de Capdepera dates back to the early 14th century. A walled complex was built on the remains of an earlier Moorish fortress. The castle was constructed in 1387 under the orders of Jaume II, the son of Jaume I the Conquerer. The fortress perches dramatically over the small town of perhaps 2,500 inhabitants. The castell’s site is historically significant for the Tractat de Capdepera (Treaty of Capdepera), signed here in 1231 between Jaume I and the Muslim Al-Faqīh of Menorca, the expert in Islamic law. According to this treaty, Menorca could remain under Muslim rule for the time being but authority was yielded to King Jaume I and his successors.
In 1862 the castle was sold at public auction and acquired as private ownership. Today one can visit the imposing site and the walkway along its crenellated walls as long as one does not suffer from vertigo. The views from up there are quite impressive. In the distance one can catch a glimpse of the neighbouring island of Menorca. A donation of 2 € is requested to gain admission to the castell.
