Son Mesquida is a small hamlet near Felanitx. For the last nine years, this pueblo has been organising annual sheepdog trials. A championship was held yesterday with the participation of shepherds and their dogs from Manacor, Pollença, Selva and Felanitx, as well as from Catalunya and the País Basc.
It was greatly entertaining to watch the proceedings. The participating sheep were traditional Ovelles Mallorquines, whereas the dogs were varied in their pedigrees, sizes, shapes and levels of obedience. The overall winner was Hilari Novillo, the guest from Catalunya, with his dog, Caliu (see photo). Hilari was declared campió dels campions. Miquel Adrover from Felanitx and his dog, Susto, came second, whilst Guillem Lliteres from Manacor, with his dog, Eixut, came third. The young man from the land of the Basques came fifth.
After the competition, paella marinera was served for all and sundry. ¡Bon profit!
The photo was taken near Felanitx, Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: December 8th, 2009. The time was 13:05:54.

Which dog breeds participated? Border Collies and…some more???
hi Ana, most dogs were indeed border collies (8 ouf a total of 13 participating dogs). there was no ca de bestiar, though. the dog that impressed me most was the little terrier type sweetie from the País Vasco but i could not really identify his species. perhaps it was a pastor vasco? but i’ve got a photo if you want to try your luck.
greetings.
Klaus
Thank you!
Last year participated one Ca de Bestiar at least…
Well, Pastores Vascos don’t look like little terrier types…
Please show me the photo – I will try my luck 🙂 !
I had to work over my position… So far I only knew the long-haired version of the Pastor Vasco – but indeed it also exists a rough-haired model!
And I also got to know that there can be a big difference in size between the different dogs.
Well, I only knew the longhaired-larger ones. The dog in the competition might have been a rough-haired-smaller-one – with an external affinity to a terrier!
I’m sorry…
