Four Sphinxes For a Three Year Old

Four sphinxes with lion’s bodies in the Egyptian style adorn the Passeig des Born in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, one at each corner of the boulevard. They were sculpted by Mallorcan artist, Jacint Mateu i Sureda.

Apparently, they were placed there in 1833 in honour of Princess María Isabel Luisa de Asturias, who was, on the death of her father, Fernando VII, proclaimed Monarch at the tender age of three. She subsequently became Queen Isabel II of Spain, and Queen regnant at that.

The photo was taken in Palma de Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: April 23rd, 2008. The time was 14:13:01.
