The truth about dogs in Mallorca is no different from anywhere else. Dogs like nothing better than their owners. Well, food perhaps. Or a bitch on heat, if the dog is a male dog.

All that, is followed by the urge to go out for a walk and to meet with other dogs and their respective owners. What fun.

But there is one slight difference in Mallorca. The average Mallorcan does not see dogs as domestic companions or pets. He or she sees the animal as a working dog who has to earn his keep. Dogs have to work on the farm, mind the sheep, help with the hunting, guard the property. And if the owner is not a campesino, the dog has to earn glory and win trophies in dog shows and competitions that are rife all over Spain.
