The parish church in Felanitx is called after the archangel Michael. Oddly enough, Sant Miquel is neither of the two principal saints of this pueblo. The town’s two patron saints are Santa Margalida and Sant Agustí, giving Felanitx its two main fiestas (July 20th and August 28th).

Back to the església paroquial de Sant Miquel. The church underwent a very thorough amount of restoration work over a good part of 2007 and 2008 during which some rather stunning wall frescoes were discovered, believed to date from the 17th century. It is almost worth a small detour to come and see these splendid murals depicting the scene of the Last Supper. As the frescoes are rather high up and above, they are not easily recognisable in their splendour, unless one parts with a one Euro coin to have the special illuminations light up. But the visual effect is well worth this small investment, I should think.

You might also want to climb up the steps to the church attic via the medieval staircase fashioned in the local piedra de Santanyí (shown in the photo). Then you will be rewarded with a rather swell view from the top of the church. Any Sunday morning would be a good time for such an excursion into the history of Felanitx, Sunday morning being the date for the town’s mercat.
