Yesterday was the day of voting for the European Parliament in Strasbourg. It was an election with the lowest participation of voters ever. Throughout Europe with a total of 350,000,000 eligible voters, only 150,000,000 or thereabouts bothered to vote (just over 43 %). Turnout throughout Spain was a little bit better with 46 %, whilst in Mallorca only 36 % of voters bothered to cast their vote.
In Mallorca, close to 575,000 voters were eligible to vote, including about 13,000 foreign residents from countries of the European Union. Of these only just over 258,000 voters bothered to turn up at the polling stations.
Of all of our friends who are foreign residents like ourselves, it seems that nearly half are not registered on the electoral list at all, and the other half simply could not care less, it would appear.
