Es Coll d’en Rabassa is a suburb of Palma de Mallorca, not far from the Palma International airport. The suburb is home to just over 10,000 inhabitants, mainly Mallorcans, foresters from the Spanish peninsula, immigrants from Latin America and a few newcomers from Europe’s new Eastern member countries.
The little square shown here is called Plaça de l’Esglèsia. The parish church, Esglèsia de Nostra Senyora del Carme, can be seen on the right. If you are curious about how real people live in a Palma suburb, you could join the local vecinos of Es Coll d’en Rabassa in their forthcoming celebrations of the Festes de Nuestra Senyora del Carme (also called Festes de la Virgen del Carme or Festes de la Mare de Déu del Carme) on July 16th. Or you could go down to the beach of Cala Gambes and enjoy a leisurely swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean sea, just the way the locals do. You might be bothered though by the constant air traffic coming into or departing from PMI airport, depending on how the wind blows.
Oh well, nothing is quite perfect.

At one time ….late 1960s….I lived in C’an Pastilla and would get on the bus to Coll d’en Rabassa to buy my meat there. The butcher shop was on the main road where the bus passed by. There were no supermarkets then, so everyone went to the carnicero for their meat and stood in line for what seemed forever while the butcher cut everyone’s meat to order, one piece at a time. Sharon.
