The Cabra Mallorquina

The Cabra Mallorquina is the oldest of all domestic animals in Mallorca. Its origins on the island seem to go back to some time between 2300 and 2050 B. C. The animal is considered a living fossil by the European Commission for the Environment.

Nowadays, the goat is predominately at home in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains and in the Peninsula de la Victoria, although recently it has also been found in the mountains of the Parque Natural de la Península de Llevant as well as in some coastal areas. In 1996, the Associació de Ramaders de la Cabra de Raça Mallorquina was set up with the aim to protect the species and to lay down rules for controlled breeding and preservation.

The photo was taken near Pollença, Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: February 24th, 2010. The time was 14:47:53.
