If one can believe the people of the Bishop’s Palace in Palma de Mallorca, the Nymphæa alba, also known as the European White Waterlily, White Lotus, or Nenuphar, is in fact an indigenous plant to the Balearic Islands. It is actually found all over Europe as well as in parts of North Africa and the Middle East in stagnant or slowly moving freshwater.
The Nymphæa alba is a very pretty plant with a lovely flower. My photo does not show the flower as it will not blossom until June. Anyway, the flowers are white with a golden centre and with many small stamens inside. It makes for a very attractive adornment for your pond, lake, fountain or water trough if you are so lucky. You can get your supply from any competent garden centre, here.
The photo was taken in Palma de Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: April 11th, 2008. The time was 11:40:11.
