Castell de Sa Punta de n’Amer

torre_den_amer

The defence tower of n’Amer was built on a protrusion between Portocristo and Cala Millor in 1696 (of course, Cala Millor was nothing but an empty coastline, then). Proposals to build such a fortified castillo were already drawn up one hundred years earlier, but it took a long time and an intervening massive attack by pirates from the Turkish shores to agree on its execution and the small matter of funding.

The tiny fortress is unique in Mallorca for its square shape, its moat and its drawbridge. At the time, two canons and four guards were sufficient to guard the torre. No more Saracen attacks were reported after its construction.

Inside, one finds a historical museum with a mini display of objects, old weapons and documents relating to the island’s defence. As far as museums go, I think one will be pressed to find a smaller one in all of Mallorca. But, all told, a visit to the Castell de Sa Punta de n’Amer is worth your while.

Even if you are of the kind that is less interested in historical monuments or, in particular, in military defence installations, you should still come. The Punta de n’Amer is an Àrea Natural d’Especial Interès, a Nature Reserve. Here you can have the nicest of outings and a stroll overlooking the sea in a sometimes park-like scenery. Just park your car at the castell and walk towards the freely grazing horses and enjoy having a good time. I am sure you won’t be disappointed. And if you should get bored you could always start counting the man-made pinnacles. They come in their thousands, and in sizes from small to ginormous.

The area is privately owned. There is no admission charge. You are merely requested to respect the natural beauty, and you are prohibited from bringing your quad bike.

  1. I took a similar photo of an old Spanish cannon which has the date 1755 inscribed. This one is in the Plaza Europa of Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife and points westward over the sea. I don’t have any history about that one though, as the plaza was built newly and so the cannon came from somewhere else. I was just struck by the similar angle in our photos. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2166/2545253093_87477ae373_o.jpg

  2. Such a lovely place, so beautiful. I noticed they even had a little black cat there, looked just like my own. What a lovely view too. One thing, is there actually anywhere on the internet that you can purchase postcasts of punta de n’amer because I never actually found anywhere in Majorca that sold them.
