Bullfighting is more of a Spanish affair, rather than a Mallorcan one. Thus, there remain only five active arenas in Mallorca for bullfights, with less than a dozen bullfights per year between them.
The Coliseo Balear in Palma de Mallorca, also known as Plaza de Toros, exists since 1865, but was newly built in 1929 in the stunningly ornamental, architectonic style of the time (see photo). No more than half a dozen events of corridas (bullfights with adult bulls) or novilladas (bullfights with a young bull of less than 4 years and a novice torero starting his career) are celebrated every year, nowadays. Instead, the Palma bullring is mostly used for concerts, tennis tournaments and other forms of entertainment. A concert with Simply Red is scheduled for August 3rd, for instance; admission is from 45 €.
There are also Plazas de Toros in Múro (built in 1918), in Inca (built in 1910 and reopened 1995), in Felanitx (built in 1914) and in Alcúdia (built in 1892).
The Plaza de Toros de Muro will stage a bullfighting performance next Sunday, June 22nd, at 18h30, on the occasion of the Festes de Sant Joan. Three bulls will fight for their lives; ultimately, none will have much of a chance. Admission for humans is 35 € (sol) and 45 € (sombra).
