Festes de Sant Nicolau de Tolentí

Cas Concos des Cavaller looks a sleepy, unworldly pueblo near Felanitx but, don’t let looks deceive you.

The village was founded around 1700. A local vassal had been ennobled by Royal decree for services rendered to the crown of Aragon. The newly ranked cavaller‘s uncle had a possessió here, and that estate served as the cornerstone for the village that soon began to sprout. Thus, Cas Concos des Cavaller is some 70 odd years older than the USA, where independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain was declared only in 1776. Consider that, next time you come here for some tapas.

The first public oratory was built in 1722, an early incarnation of the parochial church shown in this photo. It was during the 17th and 18th Century that Cas Concos des Cavaller enjoyed growth and prosperity.

In the 1960s, the village became a destination for young followers of Flower Power. The Guardia Civil, still under Franco’s iron fist, had their first Marihuana seizure here in 1967.

When I came with my family to live just outside of Cas Concos, in 1987, there were three coffee bars in this village, and no restaurant anywhere near. Of those bars, only one is still surviving, but there are now four new bars, plus four up-market restaurants, plus three Hotels Rurals, in the immediate vicinity. The foreign owned local restaurant Violeta was a roaring success during the 70s and 80s, and had relocated to Palma de Mallorca before we arrived, but soon ceased operating there.

This week, Cas Concos des Cavaller is celebrating the Festes de Sant Nicolau de Tolentí, today being the patron saint’s day. There will be music, dance, verbenas and Ball de Bot performances, and lots more. A giant paella will be prepared today at 14h00 and shared by all, providing you have booked your ticket in the local shops for a mere 6 €. The fiestas continue all week, until Sunday, September 14th, when the Fira de Sant Nicolau will be held for the first time ever. More information can be found on the website of the Ajuntament de Felanitx.

The photo was taken in Ca’s Concos d’es Cavaller, Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: September 8th, 2008. The time was 18:17:13.
