Los Reyes Magos

nit_de_reis

The public holiday of Los Reyes Magos (Three Wise Men, Three Kings or Kings from the East) is probably the most important day in the Spanish festive calendar. Three Kings are celebrated today, January 6th (Epiphany), even though the kings and their helpers arrived already last night, with their arrival being much celebrated in every town and village in Spain, and of course, in Mallorca.

The nice thing about the arrival of the Three Kings is the variation that the ceremony can take from place to place. Los Reyes may arrive by boat in one place, on horseback in another, by helicopter, by motorbike, by tractor, by four-wheel-drive, even on the back of camels or elephants, you name it. The event is much televised live on Spanish prime time television, with local celebrations in the provincial capital city taking precedence over events from Madrid or Barcelona.

Today is the day when presents are exchanged in Spain.

The photo was taken in Portocolom, Mallorca, Spain. The date: January 5th, 2009. The time was 18:06:44.
