Two Mallorcan Organ Festivals

organ_sant_francesc

October is usually the month of organ music in Mallorca. This year, two important organ festivals coincide where top organists of international renown will be performing.

Last night saw the first of four organ concerts that form part of the X Festival International d’Orgue a la Seu de Mallorca, in Palma’s Cathedral. The Cathedral’s wonderful organ dates from 1795 and was renovated in 1993. Three more concerts will be held there this month (October 11th, 18th and 25th), each at 19h45. I have pencilled in the last concert, as I want to hear the organist Marie-Bernadette Dufourcet, from France, perform. Admission will be free, but better get there early as I expect all concerts to be rather well attended.

This year the Semana de Órganos Históricos de Mallorca celebrates its 33rd edition. Concerts will be held daily until October 10th at various churches in Palma, Sa Pobla, Binissalem, Porreres and Santanyí. Tonight, October 5th, there will be an organ concert in Binissalem, performed by Bartomeu Veny. Tomorrow, October 6th, a concert will be performed by Jafet Ramón Ortega from Panama at the Iglesia del Socorro, in Palma. Señor Ortega will also perform October 7th in the Iglesia de Sant Nicolau, in Palma, this time accompanied by the Capella Mallorquina. October 8th, Señor Veny will perform at the Iglesia Parroquial de Porreres. October 9th, Hans-Dieter Möller from Germany will perform at the Monasterio de San Jeronimo, again in Palma. The final concert in this series will be given October 10th, also by Herr Möller, but on that occasion at the Iglesia Parroquial de Santanyí. I told you about the esteemed instrument from the hand of organ maestro Jordi Bosch in Santanyi only recently. All concerts start at 20h00, with the exception of the concert in Santanyí, which will start at 20h30. Again, all of these concerts are free. Aren’t we lucky?

My photo shows the splendid organ at the Basílica de Sant Francesc d’Assís, in Palma. The photo was chosen from my archive. It was taken in Palma de Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: July 3rd, 2009. The time was 11:30:15.
