Tonight is one of the nights when Mallorca is on par with the world’s big metropolises. The McCoy Tyner Trio will perform tonight at 22h30 in Sa Pobla as part of the 16th Festival Mallorca Jazz Sa Pobla. The outstanding pianist McCoy Tyner will play with the great Gerald Cannon on double base and the remarkable Eric Kamau Gravatt on drums. This gem of a concert in Sa Pobla’s Plaça Major will be free of charge. This year’s Sa Pobla Jazz Festival will offer a total of three concerts. The other two concerts will be given next Monday (August 9th) by Kyle Eastwood Band and the week after (August 17th) by the Mallorcan José Vera Quartet, also free of charge. Jimmy Weinstein and his Traveling School will hold a Jazz workshop in Sa Pobla from August 20th to 24th.
McCoy Tyner is a true Modern Jazz musician, perhaps a Jazz icon, and possibly the most pioneering and influential jazz pianist since Thelonious Monk. He is best known for playing as a young artist with the groundbreaking saxophonist, John Coltrane. Tyner played on such Coltrane gems as My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme, influencing a whole generation of keyboard players. 71 year old McCoy Tyner has so far released some eighty of his own albums; he continues writing and recording to this day. Not often do we have an opportunity to enjoy some of the world’s Jazz greats here in Mallorca, and for free at that. Better make your way to Sa Pobla or forever hold your peace.
