No Record Melon in Vilafranca

At the Festa del Meló 2010, yesterday in Vilafranca de Bonany, the heaviest melon of the year was found and crowned, but, the Guinness Book of Records mark of 25 kg for a wonder melon remains unbroken. In fact, not even last year’s result could be achieved in Vilafranca. This year’s Mallorcan winning melon, grown and harvested by Pere Miquel i Flaquer, came in at a remarkable 18,900 grammes. Last year’s competition had sported a winning melon of 21,300 grammes, with six entrants with well over 19 kg each. Perhaps the cold spell in March put pay to any hopes of a better result this time. But still. The champion melon, number 7 in the photo (above) earned a well deserved prize money of 150 €. And Guinness will have to wait for another year for a record melon, at least.

The photo was taken in Vilafranca de Bonany, Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: September 5th, 2010. The time was 11:35:34.
