The fig season has started, here in Mallorca. Yes, dried figs are available throughout the year but, there is nothing like the exquisite taste and texture of fresh figs. They are lusciously sweet; their texture combines the chewiness of their flesh, the smoothness of their skin, and the crunchiness of their seeds. Yums.
For a Summer dessert, you could try one that my wife served the other day, a delicious fig and date compote. You’ll need some loving care, plus:
8 figs, quartered
6 dried dates, sliced
100 ml orange juice
1 tablespoon of honey
3 teaspoons of rosewater
Mix the fig pieces with the dates and the orange juice in a serving bowl; add the honey and the rosewater. Refrigerate for two hours until serving time. Before serving, sprinkle with a generous helping of toasted almond flakes and sesame seeds. The fig and date compote serves 4. Enjoy.
