Mallorca used to be one of the poorest regions of Spain. People hardly had enough to eat.
I know a man who told me that his total earnings for one year’s work came to 1,000 Pesetas when he was 14 years old. Now he is perhaps 85. He used to walk barefoot to his employer on Sunday evenings, with his shoes slung over his shoulders to save his shoe soles. He would stay there all week before he would walk home again, barefooted.
This now abandoned country casita is proof of the basic living conditions in those days of yore.
