Spain celebrates All Saints’ Day today, or Todos los Santos, or Tots Sants (November 1st). On this day families honour their deceased relatives and friends. Graves and tombs are cleaned and lovingly decorated with fresh flowers. Today, or rather yesterday, is the day when most flowers are sold in Spain every year.
Traditionally, and not so long ago, the Día de los Fieles Difuntos (All Souls’ Day, or Day of the Dead) was not celebrated November 1st, but on November 2nd. However, the two public holidays were since merged into one.
Originally, All Saints’ Day was a day assigned by the Church to venerate the saints that do not have their own saint’s day because, there are more saints than there are days in a year, at least in the Catholic faith.
