Semana Santa

Yesterday’s Diumenge del Ram (Palm Sunday) marked the start of Semana Santa (the Easter week) in Spain.

In Mallorca, Catholic churches all over the island handed out olive branches or palm leaves which previously had been blessed. Fittingly, the procession of Jesus entering Jerusalem was held in Palma as well as in some villages.

Easter processions in Spain are sincere celebrations of penitance and repentance. Today, April 6th, may be the main day with five different processions in Palma de Mallorca alone, starting from various churches such as Sant Miquel, Sant Francesc or Montision (if interested you can consult the Semana Santa 2009 brochure that I already have referred to).

There will be more processions tomorrow, April 7th, in Palma and also in the pueblos, such as the Procesión del Silencio in Felanitx, a solemn affair full of drama and passion. There will be still more processions all week long in Palma as well as in a place near you.

The photo was chosen from my archive. It was taken in Felanitx, Mallorca, Spain. The date: March 18th, 2008. The time was 22:23:21.

  1. Great blog.
I have added you as link on with a rollover caption “a little bit of why we live here”. If you would care to contact me via one of the forms on the site I would like to ask some questions about the dark art of wordpress!
