Women in Black

Yesterday, a peaceful silent vigil was staged in Palma’s Plaça Espanya by the Dones de Negre per a la pau (Women in Black for Peace), a group of female, non-violent civic activists mainly concerned with solidarity for the Palestinian cause. The Mallorcan faction is part of the international group of Women in Black for Peace. The movement started in Jerusalem during 1988 when Israeli activists took to the streets to oppose the military occupation of Palestine and to stand in solidarity with their Palestinian sisters.

The protest rally in Palma was held to suggest a boycott of Israeli products and to urge the Spanish government to pressurize Israel to end its blockade of the Gaza territory.

The photo was taken in Palma de Mallorca, Baleares, Spain. The date: July 9th, 2010. The time was 19:04:43. The video was borrowed from the Internet courtesy of YouTube. It was made by Ellie Bernstein, a documentary filmmaker from Albany, New York. It was filmed in Valencia, Spain, in 2007 during a Women in Black Conference.

Thank you very much.
