The Arithmetic of Local Elections

Just for the record, I have you know that 12,612 citizens were eligible to vote yesterday in my hometown of Felanitx, for the municipal council of the town’s Ajuntament. The largest number of voters, 36.53 %, did not bother to cast their vote, a total number of 4,607 Felanitxers. Of the remaining 8,005 votes, 3,539 or 47.21 % went to the incumbent Partido Popular, affording them an absolute majority with 10 consejales (councillors) out of a total of 17. Let’s hope the batle (alcalde, mayor) will find a way to represent the 9,073 citizens which did not give him their confidence. Somehow, I doubt it.
