One of the most beautiful manor houses in Mallorca has to be Raixa, on the foot of the Tramuntana mountain range, in the municipality of Bunyola. The finca was founded by the Moors, then under the name of Araixa, some 1,000 years ago, for its abundant water sources.
In the 17th Century, Raixa was owned by the Despuig family, the Count of Montenegro, and Cardinal Antoni Despuig i Dameto who transformed the old buildings into a residential property of palatial proportions.
Raixa has been used for a number of movie location settings in the past for the beauty of its architecture and the luxuriant gardens.
The estate was meant to be sold in 2002 to a private – foreign – buyer. However, the Consell de Mallorca exerted a higher public interest claim and consequently purchased the property with tax payers’ money.
As a result of the Island Council’s action, the fortunate public – all of us – have since had all access barred, including visiting rights to the gardens.
Shame on you, Consell de Mallorca.
The photos were taken at Raixa, near Bunyola, Mallorca, Spain. The date: March 30th, 2008. The time was 12:44:16 and 12:57:08, respectively.

We tried to visit last week as the ‘Rough Guide’ to Mallorca recommended it. We were very disappointed. There are two guys building a big car park in the middle of nowhere, and as noted above absolutely no access to the property. Shame. Not even a sign, not an apology – a wasted journey for us and no doubt many other visitors.
What a tragedy! They should open this beautiful manor house where ‘Evil Under the Sun’ was filmed to the public!
We walked the gardens of Raixa yesterday. People were walking around the buildings amongst the spring flowers and almond blossom. If it wasn’t officially open it gave a good imitation.
The gardens are undergoing renovation under the guidance of the director of Sóler’s botanic gardens. They will be reopened to the public but it’s a lot of work and as yet no date has been set. But it’ll be well worth the wait!
Please update me when the Raixa estate is to be open to the public. I have wanted to visit the Evil Under the Sun location all my life.
Can someone please update me when the Raixa estate will be open to the public as I have been wishing to visit for the past 20 years.
Raixa is open Saturdays and Sundays, 10am – 2pm (but closes on the dot of 2pm so better get there by 1pm) until the end of 2009. Well worth a visit.
Can someone please update me whether Raixa estate is open already to the public.
Raixa is open Saturdays and Sundays between 10h00 and 14h00. Admission is free.
